The Six Kalimas (Six Declarations of Faith)

The Six Kalimas are fundamental declarations that express the core beliefs of Islam. They affirm Tawheed (the oneness of Allah), Nubuwwah (Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ), and Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment). Memorizing and understanding them strengthens a Muslim’s faith and guards against misconceptions.

The Six Kalimas are:

  1. Kalima Tayyibah (Word of Purity)

  2. Kalima Shahadat (Word of Testimony)

  3. Kalima Tamjeed (Word of Glorification)

  4. Kalima Tawheed (Word of Oneness)

  5. Kalima Istighfar (Word of Seeking Forgiveness)

  6. Kalima Radd-e-Kufr (Word of Rejecting Disbelief)

The Five Pillars of Islam

The Five Pillars represent the foundation of Islamic faith and practice. Every Muslim is required to observe these pillars as acts of worship and commitment to Allah:

  1. Shahada (Faith): Declaring the oneness of Allah and the Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ.

  2. Salah (Prayer): Performing the five daily prayers.

  3. Zakat (Charity): Giving 2.5% of saved wealth to the poor and needy.

  4. Sawm (Fasting): Observing fasting during the month of Ramadan.

  5. Hajj (Pilgrimage): Performing pilgrimage to Makkah at least once in a lifetime (for those able).

Wudu (Ablution)

Wudu is the ritual purification required before Salah and handling the Qur’an. It involves washing specific body parts with clean water.

Steps include:

  • Making the intention (niyyah) for purification

  • Washing hands, rinsing the mouth and nose

  • Washing the face, arms to the elbows

  • Wiping the head and ears

  • Washing the feet up to the ankles

Without wudu, prayer is not valid. The Prophet ﷺ said that wudu washes away minor sins, making it a source of both physical and spiritual purity.

Adhan and Iqama

  • Adhan is the call to prayer, inviting Muslims to leave worldly affairs and gather for Salah. It contains the shahada and reminds believers of Allah’s greatness.

  • Iqama is the shorter second call, recited immediately before Salah begins. It signals the congregation to stand in rows and prepare for prayer.

Arabic Phonetics

Learning Arabic phonetics (Makharij – articulation points) is essential for correct Qur’an recitation. Each letter has its unique sound and place of articulation.

Proper pronunciation ensures accurate recitation and prevents altering the Qur’an’s meaning. Mastering Arabic phonetics is the first step toward learning tajweed, which governs the beauty and accuracy of Qur’anic recitation.

Daily Supplications (Regular Duas)

Regular duas are short prayers recited in daily routines — such as waking up, eating, traveling, or entering/leaving home. Saying “Bismillah” before starting a task and “Alhamdulillah” after eating are simple but powerful ways to stay mindful of Allah.

Reciting these duas consistently strengthens faith, increases blessings, and helps Muslims remain connected to their Creator.

Ramadan Supplications (Duas)

Ramadan carries special duas recited during suhoor (pre-dawn meal), iftar (breaking the fast), and after the daily prayers. The month is divided into three ashras (10-day periods):

  • First 10 days: Mercy

  • Second 10 days: Forgiveness

  • Last 10 days: Salvation from Hellfire

Reciting these duas makes fasting more rewarding and spiritually uplifting.

Salah (Prayers)

Salah for Men

Men are encouraged to pray in congregation at the mosque. Performing prayers regularly purifies the heart, strengthens iman (faith), and brings peace into life.

Salah for Women

Prayer is equally obligatory for women, with slight differences in covering and posture. Women may pray at home or in congregation.

Eid Prayers

Eid prayers are special congregational prayers performed twice a year — on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. They include additional takbeers and are followed by a sermon reminding Muslims of gratitude, unity, and charity.

Funeral Prayer (Salat al-Janazah)

The Janazah prayer is a collective duty (fard kifayah) for Muslims. It has no ruku or sujood and is performed standing, with supplications for the forgiveness and mercy of the deceased.
